Plans are being made for the 30th EMI SIG Annual Meeting and our associated SCAPA Meeting. The EMI SIG Meeting will be held on May 2 - 6, 2016 at the National Conference Center (NCC) in Leesburg, VA. The meeting agenda is currently being developed at NA-41 and will focus on the Implementation Plan for Defense Nuclear Facility Safety Board (DNFSB) Recommendation 2014-1 and the replacement of DOE O 151.1C with DOE O 151.1D. Plans for the SCAPA Meeting, including its date and time within the May 2 - 6 window, will be announced as soon as we receive guidance from NA-41. It is likely that most of our SCAPA Meeting will focus on items related to comments on DOE O 151.1D, but we hope for some time to discuss technical issues related to consequence assessment and protective actions. Working groups may be permitted to hold informal technical meetings during meals or at other free times. Again, we are waiting for NA-41 guidance on how this would work.
All SCAPA members who plan to attend this year’s meeting are encouraged to register for the meeting, make lodging reservations, and lock-in travel plans as soon as possible. Registration and lodging reservation instructions are on the 2016 EMI SIG Annual Meeting Web Page.
Information on the NCC can be found at http://www.conferencecenter.com/. I had the pleasure of attending meetings at the NCC in the past, though it has probably been about 10 years since I last visited. It operates in a similar manner as the National Conservation Training Center (NCTC) in Shepherdstown, WV, where the EMI SIG has held its annual meetings the last couple of years. The NCC is much bigger than the NCTC, with multiple meetings and training sessions going on at once. The dining is sumptuous, the accommodations comfortable, and the setting is pretty.
The NCC is conveniently located only 12 miles from Dulles International Airport, 20 minutes away by car/taxi/shuttle if there is no traffic (see Figure 1). That is a relief to those of us who endured the twisting, turning, two-lane roads on the trips to and from Shepherdstown. As in recent years, the use of rental cars is strongly discouraged to minimize costs. Cab or private shuttle service between NCC and Dulles is readily available. The NCC also offers its own shuttle, which picks up at Dulles (and nowhere else). The cost for the NCC shuttle is $20 per person, each way. Reservations are required and can be made at www.conferencecenter.com/transportation.cfm.
